Ch’ng Kiah Kiean is an artist from Penang, Malaysia, and sketches his way through his city showing landmarks and daily life in new and exciting ways. I love the sketchy style to his pieces and the thoughtful splashes of colour. Enjoy!
Your sketches have a very unique style to them. How did this develop?
I think the style developed naturally through out the years, I don’t stick to a specific styles.
Let’s talk about process. What steps do you take when creating each piece?
Normally I do on location sketch. First I will walk around the site I wish to sketch and find the angle that I like most or I think it may fit well into the paper; then I will setup my simple sketching tools to start sketch.
What inspires your work?
The heritage surrounding me and nature.
Where has been your favourite place to sketch and why?
George Town, Penang. Because this is the place I born and lots of childhood memories.
What do you hope each piece says about the place it depicts?
The story and my feeling when I sketch of that place.
If you could sketch anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Any where out of the place I live. Because there is always something new to explore when you travel or leaving the place you are so get use to it.
Finally, do you have any tips for readers who might be interested in sketching whilst they travel?
Just bring along a sketchbook and some simple sketching tools, it’s really fun to sketch when you travel.
Have you been to Penang, Malaysia? Do you recognise any of the places above?
