Morocco’s capital Marrakech is full of rustic secrets and intricate design. The Medinas and Bazaars are a cacophony of colours and textures, and this is extended into many of the traditional ‘Riads’ (accommodations), too. I’ve put together a list of some of the top art hotels in Marrakech for those of you who are thinking of visiting the city but might need a little persuasion!
Riyad al Cadi
Formed around 7 patios, the Riyad al Cadi offers numerous hidey-holes for those looking to get away from it all. The Riad is decked out in true Moroccan style, complete with shades of terracotta, rustic details, and spectacular views. Plus, in every room and wall throughout the building boasts a little arty something, from local, homemade textiles, to photographs and intricate ceramics. Plan your visit here.
Riad Tchaikana
This beautifully ornate accommodation features creative nuances throughout the entire building. Swirling designs run up lanterns, elaborate wall murals characterise most rooms, and unusual sculptures, paintings, and ornaments dot every available space. The minimalist, white decor combined with the splashes of colour and texture provides a great, artist contrast. Plan your visit here.
Riad Enija
This Riad pays homage to bright bursts of colour. Designed by architect Bjorn Conerdings and Swiss designer Ursula Haldimann, it showcases numerous unique artworks throughout the winding walls with a large dose of artistic exoticism. Located in the heart of the Medina, it is surrounded by creative energy, but offers a safe haven away from the crowds. Plan your visit here.
Dar Darma
If rustic was a thing it would be Dar Darma. The elaborate archways and faded paint walls provide a texture that is matched by the large, magnificent vases and the incredibly intricate sculptures that sit throughout the building. In addition, the hand painted ceilings and collection of old, faded textiles provide a nostalgic, artistic atmosphere. Plan your stay here.
El Fenn
Contemporary art mixed with classic design is the name of the game in El Fenn. The traditional Moroccon patios and gardens are infused with touches of modern art in the form of abstract paintings, bold colours and unusual sculptures and wall hangings. Play your stay here.
Riad 72
Owned by photographer Giovanna Cinel, Riad 72 is a haven of classic contemporary design. Every room is filled with artistic touches, from elaborate, long-necked handmade vases, bright wall hangings, and rustic paintings. If the design isn’t enough to satiate you, the Riad also has one of the highest terraces in the Medina, which means spectacular views across the activity below. Plan your stay here.
Darkawa
Darkawa combines clean, European architecture with a touch of traditional rustic Moroccan design. White cube rooms are brought to life with colourful works of art, interesting sculptural shapes, and highly intricate patterns so typical of this part of the world. The result is a clean, calm, and creative environment. Plan your stay here.
Fellah Hotel
Fellah Hotel is a bit different to the other Riads and accommodations I’ve mentioned here because it is in fact an artist’s residence. All guests contribute to the cultural centre, weaving their stories into the design and narrative of the hotel. It’s just outside of Marrakech, offering the perfect place for peace and quiet whilst getting to know rural Morocco. Plan your stay here.
