Whilst researching art and artists for last week’s Artistic Representations of Prague, I came across the work of Joan Abello, a Spanish born impressionist artist.
Born in 1922 in Mollet de Valles, Abello ventured into the world of painting early on in his life and career, working underneath Pere Pruna and Carles Pellicer. Like many impressionist artists (and others during the 20th Century) Abello lived in various European countries such as Belgium, Paris, and London during his career. He drew inspiration from the great cities that have housed so many influential creatives, and this is evident in much of his work.
In his sixties he settled back into life in Spain, but didn’t stop taking trips to exotic, far-flung destinations like the Ivory Coast, Brazil, and Morocco. His paintings are inspired by scenes from all over the world, from the wide banks of the Danube River, to the Moulin Rouge in Paris, and the famous coastline of Rio de Janeiro. Sadly, Abello died in 2008 just before his 86th birthday, but he leaves behind an expansive portfolio of bright, vibrant paintings at the Museo Abello in Spain.
As soon as I saw Abello’s paintings I knew I wanted to share them with you so, today, I’ve curated some of his impressionist travel paintings for your viewing pleasure.

Beautiful! Love the colours. We’re in Prague right now and will soon be spending time in Budapest as well – nice to see these cities in paintings.
